An ancient quarry where King Herod’s workers chiseled huge high-quality limestones for the construction of the Second Temple, including the Western Wall, has been uncovered in Jerusalem, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced Sunday.
The quarry, which is located four kilometers northwest of the Old City of Jerusalem in the city’s outlying Ramat Shlomo neighborhood, was used 2,000 years ago by dozens of King Herod’s workers at the site during the construction of the Second Temple walls, archeologist Yuval Baruch said.
“This unique and sensational find is the first Second Temple quarry ever …

U.S. troop movements are being monitored by Iran using satellites and other technology and would be in range of Iranian missiles if an attack was launched, a top Iranian military official said.
In remarks published by Iranian newspapers on Monday, Yahya Rahim Safavi, an advisor to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, also said he did not expect any U.S. attack because America was too bogged down in Iraq.
Washington has refused to rule out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to end its atomic work, which the West says is …

Israeli rabbinic authorities have abruptly called on Jews to shun a major Christian tourism event, baffling and upsetting evangelical groups that traditionally have been big supporters of the Jewish state.
More than 6,000 Christians from more than 90 nations are expected to arrive in Jerusalem this week to take part in the 28th annual Christian celebration of the weeklong Jewish holiday of Sukkot, or Feast of Tabernacles, according to the event’s organizers, the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem.
Thousands of Christians take part in the celebration annually, as do Israeli lawmakers, government representatives …

According to a recent article in The Washington Post, atheism is on the rise in America. Margaret Downey, president of the Atheist Alliance International, reports that her organization’s membership has doubled in the last year. She also reports that the Alliance’s annual convention already has a 500-person waiting list.
The Barna Group, an organization of pollsters that specializes in religious issues, conducted a survey and found about 5 million adults in the United States refer to themselves as atheists.
Their poll also found a number of additional people who say they have …

Elite Israeli forces seized North Korean nuclear material during a raid on a secret military site in Syria before Israeli warplanes bombed it September 6, a newspaper reported Sunday.
The Sunday Times quoted well-placed sources as saying the commandos seized the material from a compound near Dayr az-Zwar in northern Syria and that tests of it in Israel showed it was of North Korean origin.
Israel had been surveying the site for months, according to Washington and Israeli sources quoted by the newspaper which gave no date for the commando raid or …

The United States Air Force has set up a highly confidential strategic planning group tasked with “fighting the next war” as tensions rise with Iran.
Project Checkmate, a successor to the group that planned the 1991 Gulf War’s air campaign, was quietly reestablished at the Pentagon in June.
It reports directly to General Michael Moseley, the US Air Force chief, and consists of 20-30 top air force officers and defence and cyberspace experts with ready access to the White House, the CIA and other intelligence agencies.
Detailed contingency planning for a possible attack …

Since the era of Peter the Great, the West’s perception of Russia has oscillated between fear and fascination. We are clearly back into a fear phase.
On the cover of a recent issue of Macleans, President Vladimir Putin bares his teeth and grimaces like a vampire who’s caught the scent of a virgin. “Putin the Terrible,” reads the headline. “He’s creating a neo-fascist, ultra-nationalist monster that may soon lurch out of control.” The language is a tad more florid than most media, but the message is the same. Putin is an …

Canadians are expressing pride in their economy but might be more inclined to go on shopping sprees in the U.S. after the Canadian dollar reached parity with the U.S. dollar for the first time since 1976.
Thanks to a sinking U.S. dollar and soaring commodities prices that benefit oil-rich Canada, the “loonie” — named for the Canadian bird depicted on the one-dollar coin — could be exchanged 1-for-1 with the greenback Thursday.
“It makes me feel very proud. It’s a signal that our economy is doing well,” said Toronto freelance writer Ayah …

Iran told Western powers on Saturday that they would regret launching any attack over Tehran’s nuclear activities and it rolled out a display of missiles and other hardware that underscored its warning.
“Our message to the enemies is: Do not do it,” the head of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, Mohammad Ali Jafari, said, speaking to reporters less than a week after France’s foreign minister publicly raised the prospect of war.
“They will regret it, as they are regretting it in Iraq,” Jafari added, speaking on the sidelines of an annual military parade.
