More Earthquake Faults Under Salton Sea, Tremors San Andreas

Sound waves bounced off the lake bed reveal the shifting blocks of crust, leading to a new theory of how the ground is sinking and stretching near the infamous San Andreas fault.
By bouncing sound waves off the floor of the Salton Sea, researchers have discovered more than a dozen previously unknown earthquake faults, leading to a new theory of how the ground is sinking and stretching near the infamous San Andreas fault.
Danny Brothers, lead author of a study published Sunday, said the new understanding of the area’s seismic mechanics does not appear to suggest that a massive quake on the San Andreas is more imminent than previously believed. Earthquake scientists have been interested in the region, about 140 miles east of Los Angeles, because the southernmost end of the San Andreas disappears at the banks of the Salton Sea.
Salton Sea is swarming with earthquake data
“By all reports, the San Andreas is considered overdue,” Brothers, a geophysics graduate student at UC San Diego, said Monday. “What this does is gives us more information to assess it. Now we can start to run some scenarios on how earthquakes beneath the Salton Sea might affect the state of stress on the San Andreas and vice versa.”
Scientists have not had very detailed maps of the crust under the Salton Sea, in part because underwater conditions have made it difficult to employ traditional techniques for studying faults. For years, scientists inferred fault locations there by studying earthquake data. The recordings led scientists to suggest that blocks of crust were swiveling side to side, but generally moving horizontally.
Tremors near San Andreas earthquake fault signal increased stress
Scientists have detected an increase in mysterious underground tremors along a stretch of the San Andreas fault, signaling stress that could boost the likelihood of a major earthquake.
Seismic tools buried in deep holes near the town of Parkfield, 175 miles south of San Jose, have found that the number of tremors along the fault has increased up to 80 percent over four years, according to University of California-Berkeley seismologist Robert Nadeau and graduate student Aurélie Guilhem.
The study, published in Friday’s issue of the journal Science, offers no precise forecast of a rupture along this restless region. But it may bring scientists one step closer toward the long-sought goal of predicting potentially devastating quakes. The same pressure that stimulates tremors may also stimulate quakes.
William Branham saw this over 40 years AgoFrom his sermon Choosing of A Bride in 1965:
That’s solemn warning. We don’t know what time. And you don’t know what time that this city one day is going to be laying out here in the bottom of this ocean.
“O, Capernaum,” said Jesus, “thou who exalted into heaven will be brought down into hell, for if the mighty works had been done in Sodom and Gomorrah, it’d have been standing till this day.” And Sodom and Gomorrah lays at the bottom of the Dead Sea, and Capernaum’s in the bottom of the sea. Thou city, who claims to be the city of the Angels, who’s exalted yourself into heaven and sent all the dirty filthy things of fashions and things, till even the foreign countries come here to pick up our filth and send it away, with your fine churches and steeples, and so forth the way you do; remember, one day you’ll be laying in the bottom of this sea. You’re great honeycomb under you right now.
The wrath of God is belching right beneath you. How much longer He’ll hold this sandbar hanging over that, when that ocean out yonder a mile deep will slide in there plumb back to the Salton Sea. It’ll be worse than the last day of Pompeii. Repent, Los Angeles. Repent the rest of you and turn to God. The hour of His wrath is upon the earth. Flee while there’s time to flee and come into Christ.” Let us pray.
Hamas Digging Tunnels Near UN Facilities

Hamas is digging tunnels next to United Nations facilities under the assumption that the IDF will not target them during a future conflict, defense officials warned on Sunday.
The officials said a tunnel Hamas had been digging adjacent to a UN school in Beit Hanun had collapsed earlier this month. According to some reports obtained by Israel, the collapse of the tunnel caused damage inside the school. UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness denied the report.
According to one official, the tunnel was being dug directly next to the school and likely underneath it as well.
The IDF’s concern, a defense official said, was that Hamas was digging tunnels adjacent to UN and other international facilities because the terror group knew that the IDF would think twice before bombing them.
The official said it was certain that the digging was being done without the UN’s knowledge

U.S. health officials say swine flu could strike up to 40 percent of Americans over the next two years and as many as several hundred thousand could die if a vaccine campaign and other measures aren’t successful.
Those estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mean about twice the number of people who usually get sick in a normal flu season would be struck by swine flu. Officials said those projections would drop if a new vaccine is ready and widely available, as U.S. officials expect.
Science Czar Suggested Compulsory Abortion, Sterilization

Internet reports are now circulating that Obama’s Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, John Holdren, penned a 1977 book that approved of and recommended compulsory sterilization and even abortion in some cases, as part of a government population control regime.
Given the general unreliability of Internet quotations, I wanted to go straight to this now-rare text and make sure the reports were both accurate and kept Holdren’s writings in context. Generally speaking, they are, and they do.
The Holdren book, titled Ecoscience and co-authored with Malthus enthusiasts Paul and Anne Ehrlich, weighs in at more than 1,000 pages. Of greatest importance to its discussion of how to limit the human population is its disregard for any ethical considerations.
Eyes on the skies: What hit Jupiter?

Astronomers in the Bay Area and around the world are all agog over an immense scar larger than the Pacific Ocean that has suddenly appeared on the surface of Jupiter.
Some unknown comet or asteroid must have just crashed into the giant planet’s upper atmosphere to cause the scar, the astronomers believe.
For only the second time in the 400 years since Galileo trained his primitive telescope on Jupiter, professionals and amateurs alike are observing how the planet has been blasted by a cosmic collision, and excitement is mounting about the mystery.
The only similar impact occurred 15 years ago, when huge chunks of Comet Shoemaker-Levy rained down on the planet at interplanetary speeds for five days and pitted the gaseous surface with clusters of huge black spots.
That crash has intrigued astronomers ever since, and they have been hard at work analyzing its effects on the planet in scientific paper after paper.
The new scar was first detected Sunday by Anthony Wesley, an amateur astronomer in Australia, who promptly posted a blog for other astronomers.
Abortion Mandate Slipped Into Obama Healthcare Bill

At a committee hearing last week, Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, Maryland Democrat, provided a classic example of a morally bankrupt legislator seeking to insidiously force Americans to cooperate with and fund an objectively evil cause.
On July 9, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee met to consider amendments to the legislation it is drafting to rearrange the entire U.S. health care system. While chairing the hearing, Miss Mikulski offered an obscurely worded, two-part amendment.
The first part required literally all health insurance companies in America to provide unspecified “preventive care and screenings” for “pregnant women and individuals of child-bearing age.” The specific services involved would be determined later in guidelines approved by a federal agency called the Health Resources and Services Administration.
This part of the amendment said: “A group health plan and a health insurance issuer offering group or individual health insurance coverage shall provide coverage for, and shall not impose any cost-sharing requirements (other than minimal cost-sharing in accordance with guidelines developed by the secretary) for, with respect to women (including pregnant women and individuals of childbearing age), such additional preventive care and screenings not covered under section 2708 as provided for in guidelines supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration.”
Quake, Tsunami Potential High On West Coast

Scientists have underestimated the potential for a giant quake and tsunami that could swamp much the U.S. northwest and Canadian west coasts, British and U.S. researchers said on Monday.
Geological evidence suggests there have been earthquakes in the past that were even stronger than a magnitude 9.2 quake — the second-biggest ever recorded — which caused a 42-foot-high (12-meter-high) tsunami in the Gulf of Alaska in 1964, they said.
“Our data indicate that two major earthquakes have struck Alaska in the last 1,500 years and our findings show that a bigger earthquake and a more destructive tsunami than the 1964 event are possible in the future,” Ian Shennan, a professor of geography at Britain’s Durham University, who led the study, said in a statement.
“The region has been hit by large, single-event earthquakes and tsunamis before, and our evidence indicates that multiple and more extensive ruptures can happen.”
For their study, the teams at Durham, the University of Utah and Plafker Geohazard Consultants studied subsoil samples and sediments from the Alaskan coast and found evidence of major disasters 900 years ago and 1,500 years ago.
Regulatory Czar Wants to Give Animals Right To Sue?

President Obama’s nominee for “regulatory czar” has hit a new snag in his Senate confirmation process a “hold” by Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who’s says he’s not convinced that Harvard professor Cass Sunstein won’t push a radical animal rights agenda, including new restrictions on agriculture and even hunting.
Senators are permitted “holds” to prevent a vote on a nominee from coming to the floor. They are often secretive and for very specific reasons.
“Sen. Cornyn finds numerous aspects of Mr. Sunstein’s record troubling, specifically the fact that he wants to establish legal ‘rights’ for livestock, wildlife and pets, which would enable animals to file lawsuits in American courts,” the Republican’s spokesman, Kevin McLaughlin, said in a statement to FOXNews.com.
Kiss-In at Mormon Temple Draws Shouts, Anger

Less than two weeks after a gay couple was arrested for kissing at the plaza next to the Mormon temple in Salt Lake City, Utah, a mass kissing protest near the Mormon church temple Sunday grew into a shouting match between gay activists and a group of Mormons.
The protest involved not just gay couples, but straight couples as well. This is the second consecutive weekend in which about 100 people gathered to stage a “kiss-in” to protest the treatment of two gay men cited for trespassing July 8th after they shared a kiss on the plaza owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Both gay and straight couples exchanged kisses during the protest.

New National ID Card Looks Like The Old One

If you thought the idea of a national ID card would go away with the ushering in of a new era in Washington, think again.
The era of Republican President George W. Bush brought us the REAL ID act, which was supposed to require states to take measures to make sure that driver’s licenses came into compliance with federal standards. If not, then driver’s licenses from that state wouldn’t be acceptable for boarding airplanes or entering most federal buildings.
Now that the President Barack Obama era, including increased Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress is upon us, enter a push for the PASS ID. The PASS ID has many of the traits of the REAL ID.
Writes James W. Harris on The Liberator Online: “Like its predecessor, PASS ID is radical Big Brother legislation of the very worst kind.” According to Harris, PASS ID has the support of President Obama and the Department of Homeland Security.
PASS ID, like REAL ID, would require a photograph with face-recognition technology. Each driver’s license would have to have bar codes.
They’d allow the use of radio frequency identification chips to track individuals, some of which would emit signals that can be read up to 20 feet away.
PASS ID would require states to conduct national background checks on all driver’s license applicants by running their names through federal immigration, Social Security and State Department databases, as well as through the driver’s license databases in other states, Harris writes.

From the editor – The best way to prevent this is to just get rid of the TV , if you haven’t already. Don’t look for conditions to improve.

The Parents Television Council says it’s unfortunate that CMT decided to air an ad for a sex toy during family viewing hours.
According to Noel Sheppard of Newsbusters.org, the ad ran during a primetime showing of Field of Dreams on CMT, a cable network that caters to the interests of country music fans. The minute-long ad featured women talking about the benefits of a sex toy.
Melissa Henson, the director of communications and public education with the Parents Television Council, laments what she sees happening in the advertising industry. “You know, in the last two or three years we’ve seen this marked increase in the marketing of things pertaining to the sex industry — which I find very disturbing,” she says.
It is unfortunate, Henson continues, that there is little parents can do about this latest incident because CMT is a cable channel and out of reach of the Federal Communications Commission, which polices the public airwaves.
Melissa Henson PTC”[Parents] always have the option of writing to the sponsors — and I certainly hope that people will communicate their concerns to the companies that put these ads on TV in the first place,” says the PTC spokeswoman.
Dems Sneak Hate Crimes Bill In Defense Initative

Democrats are expected to sneak the hate crimes bill through the Senate as early as tomorrow after they offered it as an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill.
The Senate approved the same hate crime legislation last year as part of the military funding bill, but it was never reconciled with the House’s bill.
The current House version – H.R. 1913, or the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 – was passed April 29 and referred to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary.
Now the Senate is considering the military appropriations bill, or S.1390, and the Senate “hate crimes” act, or S. 909, may be passed as an amendment soon.
The “hate crimes” legislation now faces its best chance in years to become federal law.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., announced Senate consideration of S.909, or the “Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act” on Tuesday.
“For the last decade, Matthew Shepard’s name has been associated with hate crimes. When this bill passes, his name will thereafter be associated with justice,” Reid said, according to a Politico report.
Sen. John McCain, R.-Ariz, blasted the hate crimes amendment today, saying it is unrelated to the defense bill

China Stops Shock Therepy for Internet AddictsChina Stops Shock Therepy for Internet Addicts China’s Health Ministry has ordered a hospital to stop using electric shock therapy to cure youths of Internet addiction, saying there was no scientific evidence it worked.
Linyi Mental Health Hospital in eastern Shandong province used the treatment as part of a four-month program that has so far treated nearly 3,000 youths, the China Youth Daily newspaper has reported, citing the psychiatrist who runs it, Yang Yongxin.
The ministry said in a statement posted on its Web site late Monday there is no domestic or international clinical evidence that electric shock therapy helps cure Internet addiction. Electric shock therapy is most often used to treat severe depression.
