Among women who tested positive, a rising percentage of local cases, nine of 10 were African American.

Mutated Cold Virus Causes 10 Deaths
[15 Nov 2007 | No Comment | ]

A mutated version of a common cold virus has caused 10 deaths in the last 18 months, U.S. health officials said Thursday. Adenoviruses usually cause respiratory infections that aren’t considered lethal. But a new variant has caused at least 140 illnesses in New York, Oregon, Washington and Texas, according to a report issued Thursday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
CDC officials don’t consider the mutation to be a cause for alarm for most people, and they’re not recommending any new precautions for the general public.

MRSA: Fighting The Superbug
[13 Nov 2007 | No Comment | ]

It wasnt that long ago that if your child got a staph infection, it was knocked out with a couple of doses of penicillin. Now, penicillin may not work because there’s a form of staph called “MRSA” that has mutated and become resistant to most antibiotics.
As correspondent Lesley Stahl reports, its a superbug that used to strike exclusively hospital and nursing home patients. Three years ago, 60 Minutes reported on a then-relatively new community-based MRSA that attacks perfectly healthy people who had not set foot in a hospital.
Thats what were …

A rising number of dual infections with HIV and tuberculosis has created a co-epidemic spreading throughout sub-Saharan Africa, researchers say.Local health systems are unable to contain the co-epidemic, the Forum for Collaborative HIV Research says.
The situation is made more urgent by increasing rates of drug-resistant TB in areas with a high prevalence of HIV.

A county in Kentucky will close all of its 23 schools Monday after one student was diagnosed with the drug-resistant MRSA “superbug” bacteria, CNN reported Saturday.
Pike County superintendent of schools Roger Wagner said he made the decision to wage war on the bacteria by disinfecting virtually everything, according to the report.
About 10,300 students will be affected by the shutdown, Wagner said.
He named classrooms, restrooms, cafeterias, hallways, locker rooms, buses, and even outdoor areas such as playgrounds and sports fields as areas that would be swabbed down.

Westchester County is asking hospitals, doctors and colleges to report any cases of an antibiotic-resistant staph infection after 10 members of an Iona College athletic team were infected, a health official said.
The county Health Commissioner, Dr. Joshua Lipsman, said he hoped to “see if there’s any kind of a pattern.” The reporting isn’t required by law.

[17 Oct 2007 | No Comment | ]

More than 90,000 Americans get potentially deadly infections each year from a drug-resistant staph “superbug,” the government reported Tuesday in its first overall estimate of invasive disease caused by the germ.
Deaths tied to these infections may exceed those caused by AIDS, said one public health expert commenting on the new study. The report shows just how far one form of the staph germ has spread beyond its traditional hospital setting.
The overall incidence rate was about 32 invasive infections per 100,000 people. That’s an “astounding” figure, said an editorial in Wednesday’s …
