An attempt by leaders of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) to win friends and influence Muslims is alienating another group evangelical Christians.

Believers of Christianity and Islam are competing to spread their respective holy book around the world, but distributors of the Bible have some advantages over the Koran.
The Bible is translated into 2,426 languages (complete or in part) and counting, including 900 English versions ranging from street slang to comic book-like translations, according to The Economist. On the other hand, the Koran is disadvantaged by the belief by some that the word of God must not be changed, even translation-wise.
Although most Muslims now accept translation of the Koran, it is still …

Written by an Atheist, this is an interesting read on the “new atheism movement”.
“New atheism” was the surprise political hit of 2007. God-bashing books by Hitchens, Dawkins and other thinkers who come out in a rash when they hear the word “religion” flew out of the bookshops. Philip Pullman’s anti-divine Golden Compass hit the big screen. Everywhere, God was exposed as a fraud and God botherers were given an intellectual lashing.
I am as atheistic as it gets. But I will not be signing up to this shrill hectoring of …

Osama bin Laden warned Iraqs Sunni Arabs against fighting al-Qaida and vowed to expand the terror groups holy war to Israel in a new audiotape Saturday, threatening “blood for blood, destruction for destruction.”
Most of the 56-minute tape dealt with Iraq, apparently al-Qaidas latest attempt to keep supporters in Iraq unified at a time when the U.S. military claims to have al-Qaidas Iraq branch on the run.
The tape did not mention Pakistan or the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, though Pakistans government has blamed al-Qaida and the Taliban for her death on …

Greeted by joyous relatives and a crowd of Israeli TV reporters, about 40 Iranian Jews landed in Israel Tuesday, leaving behind their lives in an increasingly bellicose Islamic regime for new homes in the Jewish state.
The new immigrants took a covert route, facilitated by the Israeli government and backed with funding from American evangelical Christians who see their efforts as a fulfillment of biblical prophecy.
Relatives screamed in delight and threw candy at the newcomers as they emerged into the airport reception hall after a long bureaucratic procedure.
Two brothers, Yosef and …

Muslims and Jews, a tiny slice of the U.S. population, are looking for new ways to get along that could set a worldwide example for two ancient but often alienated faiths, religious leaders and experts say.
“I’ve encountered (among Muslims) a more centrist, a more moderate voice that is looking to the Jewish community to help project that voice … to the greater world,” said Rabbi Marc Schneier of New York, speaking of a national summit of imams and rabbis he helped organize earlier this year.
He also cited a recent incident …

Is atheism the new opiate of the masses? The momentum for this question had begun long before the new Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, this week answered the BBC Radio 5 Live question, “Do you believe in God?”, with a simple: “No.” It was already under way before everyone forgot to feel affronted by the influx of seasonal e-cards wishing us all a Happy Holiday, and then comprehensively failed to notice that the mighty M&S had left out Jesus from its 2007 Christmas card collection.
The traditional Christmas school holiday period …

A Catholic priest was hospitalized Sunday after being stabbed, the Italian Embassy in Ankara said, in the latest in a string of attacks on Christians in Turkey. Police said they had detained the suspected attacker.
The assault on Italian priest Adriano Franchini was likely to add to concerns about whether the predominantly Muslim country — which is bidding for European Union membership — can protect its Christian community.
Franchini was stabbed after Sunday Mass at St. Anthony’s church in the port city of Izmir, said Simon Carta, the Italian consul there.
The priest …

Religious groups are calling for parents to think twice before letting their children see Nicole Kidman’s new film, The Golden Compass, with some labelling it sacrilegious.
The film, based on Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials fantasy books, opens in Australia on Boxing Day and its release in the US this month was criticised by the Catholic League for being anti-Christian and promoting “atheism for kids”.
The books follow a girl through an apocalyptic war between the forces of good and evil, including a thinly veiled version of the Catholic Church and a …

Two epic, family-aimed fantasy films apparently stand on opposite ends of the religious spectrum.
“The Golden Compass,” imbued with symbolism that some see as anti-religious, opens today, in stark contrast to “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” film, which opened two years ago exactly.
“Narnia” comes from C.S. Lewis, a Christian, and was intended as a parable for Christ’s resurrection. “Compass” is from atheist author Philip Pullman, and carries themes that strike out against religious hierarchy, particularly as it relates to stifling science. The Catholic League views …
