Linda Fleming was diagnosed with terminal cancer and feared her last days would be filled with pain and ever-stronger doses of medication that would erode her mind.
The 66-year-old woman with late-stage pancreatic cancer wanted to be clear-headed at death, so she became the first person to kill herself under Washington state’s new assisted suicide law, known as “death with dignity.”
“I am a very spiritual person, and it was very important to me to be conscious, clear-minded and alert at the time of my death,” Fleming said in a statement released Friday. “The powerful pain medications were making it difficult to maintain the state of mind I wanted to have at my death. And I knew I would have to increase them.”
With family members, her physician and her dog at her side, Fleming took a deadly dose of prescription barbiturates and died Thursday night at her home in Sequim, Wash.
Chris Carlson, who campaigned against the new law with the Coalition Against Assisted Suicide, called the death unfortunate.
“Any premature death is a sad occasion and it diminishes us all,” he said.
Compassion & Choices of Washington, an advocacy group that aids people who seek to use the law, announced her death.
Last November, Washington became the second state to have a voter-approved assisted suicide law. It is based on a law adopted by Oregon voters in 1997. Since then, about 400 people have used the Oregon law to end their lives.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry Affirms Texas Sovereignty

Governor Rick Perry of Texas has joined with state legislators to push for a resolution confirming the 10th Amendment rights of states such as Texas against the encroachment of federal government power.
Rush Limbaughs site features much of the transcript.
Rush: In light of all that’s happening, Obama’s speech on the economy justifying the basic destruction of the US free market — which is what this speech is. It’s the only way to describe it: the justification of the destruction of capitalism, the free market as we’ve known it and this inflammatory report from the Department of Homeland Security calling mainstream conservatives right-wing extremists, militia members, tarring and feathering returning veterans as becoming right-wing extremists and warning everybody to be on the lookout for these people on the eve of these tea parties. I want to go back to last week, last Thursday. The governor of Texas, Rick Perry, held a press conference to announce that he supports the House Concurrent Resolution 50 in Support of States’ Rights under the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution. He’s all upset about the bailout money, TARP money, the stimulus money. This is great stuff. Here’s the first of several bites from the governor of Texas.
PERRY: The federal government has become oppressive. I believe it’s become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of its citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state. Millions of Texans just like yourselves that are tired of Washington, DC, trying to come down here and tell us how to run Texas. (applause) We think it’s time to draw the line in the sand and tell Washington that no longer are we going to accept their oppressive hand in the state of Texas. There is a point in time where you stand up and say, “Enough is enough,” and I think Americans and Texans especially have reached that point.
Pakistani Taliban Chief Threatens Washington Attack

The leader of the Pakistani Taliban threatened Tuesday to carry out a terrorist attack on the U.S. capital, and said his forces were behind an assault on a police academy in eastern Pakistan.
Baitullah Mehsud said fighters loyal to him raided the police academy on the outskirts of Lahore on Monday to avenge continuing U.S. missile strikes against Islamic militants along the border with Afghanistan, a region largely controlled by the Taliban and al Qaeda.
The attack on the police academy, which left 12 people dead, “was in retaliation for the ongoing drone attacks in the tribal areas. There will be more such attacks,” he said by telephone from an undisclosed location.
Mr. Mehsud, who spoke with a handful of Pakistani reporters, is based in the South Waziristan tribal region, on the Afghan border.
A senior U.S. official said, “We’ve seen a widening of the attacks,” out of the tribal areas, and added, “this has had the effect of having a lot of Pakistanis binding together. ”
In March, U.S. officials issued a $5 million bounty for Mr. Mehsud. Domestic counterterrorism officials in Washington noted that the Pakistani militant has made similar threats in the past.
Pat Robertson Says U.S. Will Accept Socialism

Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network, announced at his staff’s annual prayer retreat that God told him Americans would embrace socialism in 2009 “in order to relieve their pain” and that the economy would rebound under an Obama administration.
“The Lord said the economy of your nation will recover,” Robertson told a group assembled at Founders Inn on the campus of Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va., a university Robertson founded.
Robertson said God also declared, “The steps taken will lead to a dramatic increase in the power of government. The people will welcome socialism in order to relieve their pain. Nothing will stand in the way of a plan by Obama to restructure the economy in the same fashion as the New Deal in the ’30s.”
In a follow-up interview he granted to Terry Meeuwsen, his co-host on CBN’s The 700 Club, Robertson added, “It will be the largest transfer of power to Washington since the ’30s. But people are willing to accept it because the pain has been so bad.”
